Web Hosting Explained
Unsure which type of web host is right for you? This guide will help you understand the differences between shared hosting, virtual private servers (VPS), dedicated servers, and cloud hosting; so you can choose the right type for your website.
Web Hosting And Domain Name
First thing first, what’s a web hosting ? Web hosting (or simply web host or host) is a place where we store and organize our websites.
Generally, when we talk about a web hosting, it refers to companies that provide virtual space on a computer (server) to host your web content (think html files, php scripts, images, videos, and blogs) for your website, as well as providing Internet network so other computers are able to access your website. A web hosting shouldn’t be confused with a web host as they are two different entities. To simplify: A domain name, is like the address of your home; web hosting on the other hand, is the space of your house where you live and place your stuffs.
Generally speaking, there are four different types of web hosting, namely Shared, VPS, Dedicated, and Cloud Hosting. As each type of hosting serves a different purpose, we will look a little closer and understand them.
Shared Hosting is the most common (and the cheapest) web hosting options. The server is shared by multiple hosting accounts in one single hosting environment. In other words, all users share the same IP address and computing resources (hard disk space, RAM, network bandwidth, etc etc) from the same server.
In VPS Hosting, with proper server configuration, a server is divided into multiple virtual units. Each unit acts as a virtual dedicated server; each virtual dedicated server is occupied by one user only.
As indicated by the name, a Dedicated Hosting user will rent the entire server for his/her own usage. A Dedicated Hosting can be used for hosting one single website or it can be used for mulitple websites – it all depends on the users’ preference. Dedicated Hosting is best for websites that need highest server performance, hosting security, and maximum control.
Cloud hosting is one of the many utilizations of cluster server technology. Generally speaking, a cloud-hosted website is supported by multiple networked servers. With proper software configuration and load balancing, server resources are distributed to the websites base on real-time demand.
I Need A Web Hosting Service, Where Do I Start?
There are thousands of web hosting plans online – which one should you choose? Do you actually like to read thru dozens hosting reviews before making a choice?
The answer is no.
While many think the more hosting choices you have the better; I concluded that more choices do not equal to wiser decision. All you need is a good web host to do the job – and most of the hosting companies come with the same features these days – so there’s really no point to stretch yourself thin in this. If you trust me (learn why you should), then you should just make use of the big comparison chart on the homepage and pick your web host in less than half an hour.
